Hi Victoria,

Thanks for your response :)

That's a fair point about the Airport companies and a shame they're not more on board with this idea. I hope one day that will change, as swipe-in style cars could have a lot of potential, mostly for domestic travellers.

I wanted to comment on your cityhop airport experience.

Yes the airport is a really dear place to park and get too.

$80 in a taxi to the CBD last week. Cityhop have a minimum time period to cover the costs of getting cars back from the airport as well as to cover the cost of parking.

The idea of having a park at the airport - well yes, we have tried approaching the airport company and Air NZ. All these places claim to have a sustainability programme and what could be more sustainable than encouraging people to drive less and car share?

Airport option is to try and help cityhop members but it does have restrictions because the cars aren't used often enough and we would end up with flat batteries. But the more people who use and support more chance we can change that!

cheers

I believe talk on your blog post points to a good answer, that it's historical - it harks from back in the day when there was nothing to do on a Sunday and drivers needed to be paid double-time. And church ministers were very disapproving that there were Sunday services at all.

Which brings us to the conclusion that this practice needs reviewing - are the original reasons for separate Saturday and Sunday timetables still relevant and should they be merged?

I'm also a fan of having the same frequencies for weekday offpeak and Saturdays. It would make the Connector route mentioned above workable for people, like my customer mentioned above, who currently drive because it is the only currently practical option.

(Note too the 575 mentioned above doesn't run on weekends at all!)

I get so frustrated with the completely unproven belief that people aren't expected to use public transport at the weekends. I thought the success of Sylvia Park train station had killed that off? Clearly not.

Just like the other unexplained rule of public transport - that Sunday service levels must be worse than Saturdays. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Thanks!

I can't take credit for the <del datetime="2010-01-15T02:05:37+00:00">free</del> subsidised parking point, that was posted on Josh Arbury's blog earlier - I reposted it here just to spread the message :)

Both Josh and I first learned the concept from <a href="http://www.bettertransport.org.nz/tag/julie-anne-genter/" rel="nofollow">Julie-Anne Genter</a> who was in the video linked to in the post you're talking about (<a href="http://www.silverstream.net.nz/blog/2009/11/subsidised-parking/" rel="nofollow">here</a>).

Andrew, Great blog. I came over from the transport blog. Like your article on "free" parking. My wife is going back to study at Unitec and I asked her how much parking was going to cost? She said it was free. Amazing, Auckland is like another world.

Thanks for the encouragement :)

January may also be a bit of a challenge. I've been loving the coolness and convenience of the Discovery Monthly but with its high cost, calendar month alignment and being away for three weeks I can't justify paying for it alone. Unless someone out there wants to share?

Hey - that's ok - you're human after all. The trick is lengthening the time between driving alone in your car - aim for 58 days next time before you cave in!

The Cityhop $30 is effectively one-way.

There is one thing I should have mentioned that you need to take into account. The annual fee for being a Cityhop member is $75. It'll be worth it for us as I already joined and paid that as part of this trial.

To be honest one of the bus services is probably more economical, if more time consuming. However since writing the above post I've realised the bus is not an option for us at all.

By bus, from here, the first Sunday service of the morning doesn't get into town til 8:05am, and from there the Airbus would then arrive at the airport at 9:07am. Our check-in time is 8am!

I'm not sure how we will be returning from the airport yet when we're back.

Hmmm... so if I use a Cityhop car - book an o'night rate for $30 then drop it out at the airport dropoff it's only $30? GREAT

At the moment its $40 for my partner and I to use the bus out there... so that's a saving there of $10.

What about coming back?
